In Defense of Boring Normalcy

You may have noticed my lack of presence on social media as of late.  Or maybe you didn’t, but it doesn’t matter. The point of leaving was not to make people “miss me,” although I know some people do that now as a way to get some kind of weird validation/attention.

No, I was just sick of it all. Almost everything I saw on social media (especially Instagram, but Twitter and Facebook and Snapchat, too) was fake.

Today I signed a sympathy card for a co-worker who lost a parent suddenly. I opened the card and my pen hovered over it for half a minute or so, because what do you say? What can you say that doesn’t sound completely insincere, even though you’re trying to be genuine? The truth is, you can’t. Not really. But acknowledging this and accepting it is better than pretending uncomfortable and awkward and painful things don’t happen at all, and happen to everyone. That’s what I kept seeing on the internet.

Woman’s husband goes missing with no plausible explanation. Internet forums spread like poison, saying truly awful things about this woman and her family. Do they know her? Doesn’t matter. On the internet, humanity seems to be a lesser priority than looking/being a certain way for others (also strangers).

Blogger posts a picture of her kid on a bike without a helmet, in the driveway. Again, people say gross, nasty things to her, condemning her parenting. I’m betting none of them are perfect parents.

The most popular pictures are mostly staged, showing a girl’s “good angles” or her husband’s perfect sleeping face, or an untouched meal. When people talked about being depressed or anxious because of this pressure to be perfect, most every one of their followers reached out saying “me too.” I began to wonder. Social media was starting to be confusing. Like yogurt.

Yogurt has probiotics and it’s generally good for you. But buy the wrong brand and you’ll be eating mostly sugar. But whatever, it’s all yogurt, right? This is a bad metaphor but I’m sticking with it.

After I deactivated my Instagram, I immediately noticed how much time I had in a day. I used to lament in my prayers every night-- “Heavenly Father, please help me have more time to get things done.” Help me have more time. Ha! What a goofy prayer. I hope God knows what I meant when I said that prayer, but uh, we can’t have more time than we’ve got. It’s already been allotted to us. Anyway, I realized this face-smacking obvious fact when I got rid of the biggest distraction of all: other people living their lives. Or taking pictures of their lives. See? Confusing. Yogurt.

I also stopped taking pictures of everything. This might be a negative, but okay...I’m just going to say it...not everything in my life requires a picture for me to remember it. And maybe I didn’t want to remember the day I did laundry all day and killed a giant spider in the hallway for the umpteenth time (mostly I just don’t want to remember we have spiders in our basement). Maybe a normal day is just that--normal! And kinda boring. But who cares? Most days are like that.

Even though I wasn’t taking pictures, I was noticing things more. I had never seen the giant sunflower patch near our house until yesterday. I’m slightly embarrassed to admit this, but I know it can happen to all of us.

I was tired--literally brain-fried--from coming up with a caption for everything. I didn’t see the point of sharing what came in my Amazon packages (Cetaphil lotion and a windshield protector--sexy, I know). You know those “unboxing” videos that are becoming popular now? They just made me feel like I had to buy all the things! And I didn’t. I don’t. I have plenty.

That was the other thing I began to notice--how grateful I am. I don’t need a single thing! Once you need less, you have more. I have health insurance. I have boring five dollar lotion when my elbows get dry. Most days I don’t wear makeup, which is a sweaty burden in the summertime. I haven’t painted my nails in three months. My husband is a really nice guy, who makes me laugh every day. I have a good relationship with my parents. I work in a library and have access to so many BOOKS! (that’s another thing I’ve been doing more of...reading). I get to ride my bike to work, which feels nice. All my organs work relatively well. I have Spotify. And even when something goes wrong and I want to cry (and usually do), the next day, the sun inevitably comes back up... and burns my neck on the way to work.

In short, I’m alive. Most days are not glamorous by any stretch. But I’m trying to love them all. I’m grateful God gave me this time. And even if I’m never a gazillionaire with a huge wardrobe and a year-long travel log and a six pack, I will still feel like I didn’t deserve any of it. When I’m not worrying about what everyone else thinks of me or my life, it leaves more room for serving and loving them, and myself.
Good ol’ King Benjamin tell us how:

“And again I say unto you as I have said before, that as ye have come to the knowledge of the glory of God, or if ye have known of his goodness and have tasted of his love, and have received a remission of your sins, which causeth such exceedingly great joy in your souls, even so I would that ye should remember, and always retain in remembrance, the greatness of God, and your own nothingness, and his goodness and long-suffering towards you, unworthy creatures, and humble yourselves even in the depths of humility, calling on the name of the Lord daily, and standing steadfastly in the faith of that which is to come, which was spoken by the mouth of the angel.

And behold, I say unto you that if ye do this ye shall always rejoice, and be filled with the love of God, and always retain a remission of your sins; and ye shall grow in the knowledge of the glory of him that created you, or in the knowledge of that which is just and true.”
Mosiah 4:11-12 (I would recommend reading verses 13-30 too)

friday thought

Passion has little to do with euphoria and everything to do with patience. It is not about feeling good. It is about endurance. Like patience, passion comes from the same Latin root: pati. It does not mean to flow with exuberance. It means to suffer.

I just tried to get up from the couch and I couldn't

we're related.

That thing I wrote as the title= the absolute pinnacle of vegetating.

Yeah, it's a word. I just looked it up on thesaurus dot com because I wanted a different word for what I've been doing, to make it sound better. But you know what, the internet gave me "vegetating," and gently patted my hand as if to say, "There is no better word for that. Sorry, bud."

Today I finished my last two papers, and so I think I'm going to go for a run. YES. I'M GOING TO GO OUTSIDE. My skin might incinerate before I get past the front lawn, but whatever. At least then I won't have to think about starting my thesis soon. Yeah, summer break doesn't mean that much when you in grad school. I wish I could stop talking about grad school on this blog. Us too, you're all thinking. Don't worry, I know. I know.

OTHER ITEMS OF BIDNEZ:

Houston wants papaya for his birthday. That's it. He said "If I ask everyone for papaya, I know I'll get a lot of it. And then...I'll have papaya."
Me: "......."

PAPAYA. Kaitlyn Bothwell, if you're reading this, you're making the same face I made when he told me this. The same fruit we had to tell Mexicans we were allergic to so they'd stop giving it to us for breakfast. Oh well. I'll get him papaya (whoops, don't tell him) (Houston pretend you didn't read this), because he doesn't block me when I send him texts like this:

My parents have a puppy two puppies. Look, see. What else do you come here for? I really can't say.

this is Pip. a picture of her sister is forthcoming.

There's this scene in Eddie the Eagle when Christopher Walken walks in (no, stop with the DAD jokes, gosh) (yes I am talking to myself right now) to a locker room and it's just such a weird scene, but anyway, it's supposed to be serious, because he picks up Hugh Jackman's skiing book with ol' Chris Walken's face on it, and Chris Walken says, "Nice book you got there. Need me to sign it?" Meanwhile everybody in the locker room is just staring at what must be the Most Inappropriately Timed Autograph Signing Of All Time (in their towels). I think it's supposed to be a really poignant scene but it's not, and everybody in the movie theater probably wanted to assassinate me and Houston because we couldn't stop laughing. Disclaimer: I almost assassinated myself just now trying to spell "assassinate."

That feeling of trying to keep yourself from laughing which instead just makes you laugh more is just like the feeling you get when you're done with your first year of grad school. You're like "K, I'm gonna relax for a bit now, maybe take a nap or go inhale or maybe--MAYBE I will venture to the faraway land of Smith's." But pretty soon you trying to do other things just makes you wonder if you should, in fact, have this much free time on your hands, so you make a huge mistake. You check your email. And what should you find there but an email from a student, long after their final papers were due.

"Hi, so last night when I turned in my paper my internet must've cut out RIGHT when I turned in the paper, so can I turn it in now?" (twelve hours later).

Me:

Why did I check my email? I should've pretended that inboxes didn't exist. Idjit!

You silly girl. Inboxes won't stop existing until you're laying horizontal in your coffin. But probably not even then. Sigh. Shoot, is it laying or lying or laiding or ladling goshDANGIT I have been writing and grading for nine straight months please send help.

Just recently (five minutes ago, just so you know how credible I am) I was browsing the Pinterest when I saw this Steve Jobs quote again, which I'm sure many well-meaning hipsters have nailed to their walls by now:

and then I was like:
C'mon Steve. You're not fooling anyone.

That concludes today's meaningless blog post. Thanks for reading and also I am sorry.

I've got 99 problems but a Houston ain't one

  • His love for Tandoori Oven is unmatched. One week he went three times (I counted).
  • He has trouble getting off couches "cuz they're so comfy." Like literally he can't get up. I usually give him a push, but sometimes I just watch him struggle.
  • He points with three fingers instead of one.
  • He taught me that the word "caucus" is also a verb. this is how the conversation went.
    • him: are you caucusing on tuesday?
    • me: you mean voting?
    • him: no caucus is a verb.
    • me: no it's not.
    • him: you know, to caucus, caucaulogy (that is NOT a word), the study of caucusing? it's first grade, McKenzie.
    • me: -_-
  • If there's a weird old man in a movie we're watching he says "I aspire to be that man." there's weird old men in practically every movie we watch. I'm not joking.
  • He consumes more peach lemonade and/or Sobe water than there are Lakes in Michigan (probably).
  • If you don't laugh at his jokes right away he emits one small, tiny chuckle like three seconds later. Kinda like when you want more likes on an old Facebook post, so you comment on it and then it shows up on your friend's feeds and they like it. I call it the "last chance laugh."
  • The first time he gave me a gift (it was his favorite book), I responded by saying "You know I've already read this, right?" Smooth.
  • If he's at the end of a podcast (literally just the closing music) but you call him, he'll ignore the call just so he can listen to the closing music.
  • He gets push notifications on his phone for the NBA and CNN. I get push notifications for ASOS and Pinterest. Oh, how the turntables.
  • He's so ticklish you just have to point your finger in his general direction and he'll flinch.
  • *coming to a realization about fashion* "Wait, your shoes do matter."
  • He knows the quickest and surest way to get me to roll my eyes all the way back into my skull is to start a sentence with "Well, I'm from Ogden, so....."
  • After I basically did a somersault on the sidewalk to avoid getting dive-bombed by a bird, he said "You and I both know I'm the sane one."
  • The other night we were driving back from Nibley and he swerved to avoid crushing a cup in the road. A PLASTIC CUP.
  • He drove me all the way to Bear Lake on a school night because I'd never been and I wanted to look at the stars. They didn't disappoint.
  • He leaves food on my porch all the time.

I smish I may, I smish I might

This was my ornament circa 1995. FROSTY THE SNOWMAN IN A SWING. Was I the envy of every kid on the block? No.

In approximately one week and 11-ish hours, I will have yet another birthday. And it will be 2016. Yuck!

To celebrate, I have conjured up some alternate names for "The Year 2015." Y'all ready for this?! (*Space Jam song should be playing somewhere nearby, at least that's what I rigged this post to do for all of you)

The Year McKenzie Cried Every Time She Saw a Baby Animal And/Or Looked At Her Bank Account.

visual aid 1: when I see a comma in my bank account

The Year McKenzie Lost Her Water Bottle On the Tracks of the London Underground & That Was the #1 Story She Told Everyone About Europe. A Frapping Water Bottle.

The Year McKenzie Dumped Salt On Everything, Even Pizza. Hey, Do You Guys Hear That? That Silence? It's the Sound of My Heart Stopping.

The Year McKenzie Learned to Do a Headstand On One of the Most Horrible Days On Record, and Then Followed That One Headstand With Fifty, And Then Got a Migraine, Punctuating That Most Horrible Day With A Migraine, Great.

The Year McKenzie Learned The Difference Between Heartburn and Bubble Guts, JK She Already Knew This, She Just (Accidentally) Tested It By Ingesting Way Too Much Orange Juice.

The Year At Least Five Strangers Told McKenzie Her Calf Muscles Were *Quote  "Nice" *Close Quote*

And now, for the 2015 Stats Report, since you all obviously care (you're still reading this, aren't you?)
  • Number of times puked: four
  • Number of times puked while 20,000 feet up in the air: four (what do you know!)
  • Number of hoodies purchased: not telling
  • Number of cats I hugged but received no love in return: wait I don't want to talk about this
  • Number of new friends made via the internet/horrible hikes: like FIFTY and I love you all, MUAH!
  • Number of times I made fun of Nicolas Cage: probably 12 million. And then someone would send me one of THESE almost immediately (they haunt me and it's karma and I know it):
visual aid 2: someone has to stop this. right now. stop right now.

  • Number of times re-downloaded/then deleted/then downloaded Tinder again while Hello Darkness, My Old Friend played in the background: three (but never again, plz)
  • Number of chocolate chips consumed: probably a wagonload
IT'S CHRISTMAS EVE, NERDS! This morning I was throwing away a bunch of empty garbage bags and Ellie snatched them from my hand and said "No! We could use these to play Baby Jesus in our nativity!" Bags? A pile of garbage bags????

timpernougat: the time our knees became shredded barf

If you don't know what "shredded barf" is, I won't tell you, but I will direct you to this video and tell you that it's not what it sounds like. Promise.

I want you guys to know that I DID smile and laugh on this hike thanks to my homies Trent and Shae, bless them, but gosh it's hard to laugh at 11,752 feet. There's no extra air up there for laughing the way that I do (whole body movements, bending over, etc). You can't ralllyyy bend over on top of Timp, or you'll fall over on top of Timp, and then suddenly be on the bottom of Timp.

Here is a brief list, conjured from the broken shards of my brain, of things that were said on this hike by various persons (no names will be mentioned to protect the innocent/also I can't recall exactly who said the thing. Make it a game! Guess who said the thing!)

"This protein bar has 35 grams of protein."
"35 grams?! Wanna hook up?"

"Can we slide down the glacier?"
"Not unless you don't ever wanna have kids."

"It would be nice if there was a zipline right here {at the summit}."
"It would be faster."
"Another thing that would be faster is if you just rolled off the mountain. Cuz then you'd be dead, and wouldn't have to finish."
*blank stares*

"Ok but who put these rocks here."
"WHO PUT THESE ROCKS HEEEERE."
*upon seeing more rocks*
"Cuss word." (I'm not gonna write it, duh, this is a family blog!)

"Are you on your period?"
"No...why would you ask me that."
*gross smile*
"??????????????????"

"My hands are swole. Like little sausages."
"My hands have DIMPLES. They shouldn't have dimples!"
"Himples."
"You guys are on your period."
"*Jim Halpert face emoji*"

"I can't slide down any more dirt. I just bought these leggings."

"Can't believe this is paved for so long. I wonder what kind of Eagle Project on Steroids that was."

"I blinked my balls. My eyeballs. I probably shouldn't say that unless we're taking a picture."
"Or you're blinking."

"GET NAKED! I mean...what?"

*to the wide expanse of rock and ice*
"STOP SAYING PER-PER!!!" (it kinda echoed, guys)

"We've burned 3500 calories today."
"Is that it?"
"That's like 2.5 days worth."
*thinking of all the food I can eat*
"Is that it?"

"You did this to me."
"It's not my fault you decided to hike this pregnant."

"Why did I buy these nectarines? What are nectarines?"
"It's like a PEESH, but harder, so easier to carry in a backpack."
"I don't like these. It's your fault I bought them."
"It's not my fault you don't know what a nectarine is!"
*deep conversations at the summit, part five*

"What's wrong with my legs?"
"It's all the lactic acid building up."
"Should I put my feet up or something?"
"Just eat a huge plate of spaghetti with broccoli."
"I only have noodles."
"Same difference."
*grabs cereal*

"I can't stand for very long because my legs are...they have..."
"Jelly bones."
"What an accurate description."

*talking about a movie*
*someone mentions Christian Bale*
*someone down below us goes "Yeah?"
Maybe you had to be therrreee.....but really that was funny! ha! HAHAHAHAHA I'm DELIRIOUS.

"I think you'll have a six pack tomorrow because of this."
"Eh. Not worth it."

"Is that a baby goat? A BABY? A BABY GOAT! IT'S A BABY GOAT EVERYONE LOOK AT THIS TINY PERFECT SPECIMEN OF A GOAT." -everyone said this as they passed the baby goat, let's be HONEST.

And now, a picture dump before my computer dies, along with my phone, and me. Huh? I didn't say anything. May you all be wiser than we were and take an elevator to the top of Timp.

the back of Shae

do you see the eyeball!?! this is funny because a) LOTR reference and this mountain is basically Mordor and b) we said the word "eyeball" like 50,000 times on this hike

those humans were sliding into the lake from the snow, yay for them, and yay for us for not doing it

THE GOOOOATS

here is is a more terrible pic of the goats but srsly the baby one was just chewing and staring at everyone I NEED ONE

my face is so swell (as in swollen) (and I'm grimacing) (but I am happy to be at the top por fin)

the back of Shae, the sequel

I like black and white too, sowhatwhocares

anytime someone looks at me: *peace sign*

going to there.

Dear Apple, why do you make such expensive/sleek products and then make it so they have to update every hour on the hour but also make it so you have to delete everything on your device to update it and also just...why?????? are you??? the way that you are???

I sold ye olde iPod (because #europe) but then when I went to erase it, it locked me out! So here's a big PSHHHHHHHH to Apple. PISH-POSH! To you and yours! (Also RIP Steve Jobs). After 3 hours of reading those huge-long threads on Apple Support (which isn't actually "Apple" Support, it's "Humans Who Have to Put Up With Apple Helping Each Other" Support), I finally got it erased. But honestly. Ok rant about technology is over for today.

So. Europe. I didn't really tell very many people I was going because...well, because of that whole internet stigma of people having the perfect life (on the internet and only the internet, so help us all). And I know what it's like to be jealous of people who supposedly have lives where they do the following: travel a lot, "wake up like this" a lot, are "obsessed with their husbands" a lot, have cute puppies a lot, seem really fit/like they have awesome thighs/perfect brows/can rock a beanie/look good without eyelash extensions/are very very spiritual a lot. And ya know what, okay, people DO have happy lives! It IS a thing! But the internet has somehow made it...not ok? To be doing cool things?

I get it. Instagram is one particular platform that presents a "highlight reel" if you will, and yes, I sometimes scroll through someone's feed and want to gag because I'm like "Where is the justice?? I'm a good person, right! I wanna shop exclusively at Madewell and be friends with bulldogs! PICK ME, UNIVERSE!" But I've also learned this from the internet: it's only a half-truth. Everybody suffers. Nobody is exempt from problems or struggles every single day. According to my Instagram, I'm in the woods a lot and I draw a lot. I have time to draw about once a week and I rarely ever plan to go to the mountains. It's spontaneous, yo! What I'm try'na say is...stop comparing yourself to strangers on the internet because it just makes everything in your life less awesome. And everyone's life is awesome. Even if it's not in Instagram. And even if it is!

*soap box collapses*

Where was I even going with this???????

Oh yeah. So Europe. I'm going there. And I hope when you see the pictures you'll be like "Hey! I'm totally gonna follow her footsteps someday." Because that's what I do now when I get envious of people's Instagram-lives. And then I see a picture of a mom with puke on her shoulder and I think the same thing. Gotta keep it realz.

P.S. If I was rolling in the Benjamins I would take ALLL of you to Europe with me. By "all of you" I mean my parents first, then siblings, then the rest of all of you.

of hummus and goldfish crackers (and togas, what else)

Fact.

So, funny story. A little over a week ago I was in Mexico. Yeah, that country RIGHT BELOW us! The story of how I ended up in Mexico is one of pure happenstance, but most spontaneous things I do are like that. A month ago I didn't think my Thanksgiving would consist of

a) chasing dogs down a dirt road in Mexico
b) picking up strange Mexican children off the street in Mexico (and offering them licorice. Okay this is sounding worse and worse as I type it. HE WAS GIVING US DIRECTIONS)
c) changing a busted tire on the side of the road in the dark in Mexico
d) eating turkey on the beach
e) introducing goldfish crackers to the Mexican people (they loved them, duh)

Here is my tip for driving in Mexico:

Sorry for the lack of apostrophe. I didn't make that image because who has time to make the pictures for their blog???? Definitely not this human (*points to self*).

We did so many cool projects. My eyes were opened nice and wide to the poverty which most of the world lives in. The sad part is that these people don't really know what they're missing out on. Maybe that's better, I don't know. But it would be so frustrating to live in a Mexican resort town in a shanty village and to see the fancy hotels down the road. The hardest/most fulfilling part for me was giving away our leftover food to the homeless. This was the food that probably most Americans would waste (brown bananas, stale rolls, etc), but they were so, so grateful for it. In fact, the kids were clamoring for the manzanas (apples) like they were grilled cheese. It broke my heart but also filled it up at the same time. To see true gratitude on Thanksgiving was the best way I could've spent that holiday.

Also, did you know that traveling for 30-something hours with perfect strangers will either make them your BFF or your worst enemy? DID YOU?! Everyone knows that when you're dating someone who you think is the one, there are one of two tests you can perform: the long hike test and the long road trip test. Both must be long, so you can see a) what their taste in music is like b) how they act after being trapped in a confined space for a long time or c) how they act after physical exertion and no sleep (long hike test, waddup). Also, you get to see them with pretty much no makeup/no shower/no change of clothes ever. #marriage or #breakup ???

My Christmas wish is to go on a road trip with someone who has the exact same taste in music as I do. PLZ BLESS, SANTA. PLZ BLESS.

I'll be real widchu, pretty much errybody on this trip became my BFF. Kenzie was already my Bacon And Eggs, but I think the real hero of this trip was Skylar SomeCoolMiddleName Call. Ps Skylar what's your middle name..? I know everybody on the trip knows my middle name now, because Alejandro insisted on calling me by that name instead of my first name because Kenzie has the same name and calling us by numbers was too easy.

And now this post shall turn into Shiz Skylar Says: (heheh you didn't know I wrote it all down did you)

"Oh...he just a got a picture of my butt. Good thing I accentuated it."

Me: Skylar why are you looking at us through the seat hole.
Skylar: You can do anything with a beard and it's weird.

Kenzie: So, it's 3 o'clock, we're driving to Arizona, and your dream girl calls you up and says she wants to get married tonight, but it has to go down before midnight. Who is it? What do you do? What will everyone wear?
Skylar: Well, obviously it would be Nicole Margarine (name has been changed to protect the innocent). And Morgan Freeman would officiate the wedding.
Kenz: Do you know Morgan Freeman? How do you have the hookups?
Skylar: {ignores question} Oh yeah and Bill Murray HAS to be at my wedding. He shows up at people's weddings all the time.
Kenz: What! But how do you know these guys?
Skylar: BILL MURRAY IS COMING TO MY WEDDING.
Kenz: Okay, okay and what about Nicole? What's she gonna wear?
Skylar: Well, she'd wear a toga, because togas look good on everybody.
Everyone in the car: ......
Skylar: And she'd wear one of those Caesar rings on her head, you know with the flowers? And her dress would have the interwoven stringy things. And I want twizzles in her hair.
Kenz: Twizzles?
Me: You mean like crimped hair?
Skylar: Twizzles.
#twizzles
Skylar: And we'd go to a private island on a boat. And we'd have a private skipper.
Me: What's a private skipper?
Skylar: Just an exclusive captiain of our ship. And he'd take us to an island, probably around Seattle. And THERE WOULD BE HORSES. Everyone has to be on a horse.
Me: Including Morgan Freeman.
Skylar. Yes.
Kenz: Who would the photographer be?
Skylar: Oh we'd just wear GoPros on our foreheads.
Kenz: I'd be pissed if my husband did that.

Skylar, in the car randomly one day: My mom won't let me go running on the mountain because she thinks people will think I'm a crazy person and I'll get shot.
Me: It's your beard.

Kenz: Want some hummus?
Skylar: Maybe a little.... {pause} Heheh yeah right (A PERFECT SUMMARY OF SKYLAR, YO)

Skylar: I was born on Harriet Tubman's birthday.
Me: Did you know that Harriet Tubman is E.T.'s doppelganger?
Robbie: Doppel-what?!

*everybody having a deep discussion about something in the car*
Skylar interrupts with: Ooh, that is an old wall.

Maybe all of these are pointless to you who do not know Skylar, but now you'll want to know him. And that definitely was not really the point of this post.

Happy THANKSGIVINGZZZZZ.

post-flat tire incident

probably my favorite picture from the whoooole trip.

The view.

Putting in insulation=ITCHY ALL UP IN EVERY CREVICE, YO

"Don't they have sand in Alabama?!"

google translate it. or don't, I'm not the boss of you.
